The City That Is Well-known Because of Earthquake

Lisbon earthquake is by far the seriousest earthquakes in the Europe, which occurred in the the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, tens of kilometers away from Lisbon. The consequence of Lisbon earthquake is so serious that the whole city was almost damaged and about 70,000 people died in the earthquake. What’s worse, the earthquake resulted in tsunami with 30 meters high and assault the coast of Lisbon. in addition to Portugal, the United Kingdom, North Africa and parts of the Netherlands had suffered damage, even areas in Central America could see the large wave. After 214 years the earthquake happened, thatmeans in the February 28, 1969, another earthquake with 8 magnitudes took place in the west coast.

400 years ago, Lisbon is the center of the most powerful empire in the world. However, becasuse of the decline at political and economic environment, Lisbon has gradually fade out the international stage in recent centuries. At AD 1255, Lisbon became the capital of the Portuguese Empire, in the late 15th century, both Lisbon and Portuguese Empire entried the most thriving period. Explorers from Portuguese left their footprint all over the world including Asia, Africa and South America. November 1, 1755, Lisbon earthquake happened and the glory disappeared instantly, nearly one in five died in this earthquake and two out of three cities were damaged. Under the lead of Minister, the country began to reconstruct and nowadays the new squares and churches building with Catholic style endow a new look for Lisbon.
